Douglas L. Crain, 82 of Dakota City passed away Friday, December 21, 2012 at a South Sioux City Care Center. A gathering at the South Sioux City Eagles Club will be from 11 A.M. until 1P.M. Thursday December 27, 2012 for a memorial service, lunch and time of sharing with the family. Douglas was born December 9, 1930, in Laurel, Nebraska the son of David E. and Evelyn (Halladay) Crain. He graduated from Dixon Nebraska High School. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard during the Korean War and was honorably discharged June 21, 1956. He owned and operated Crain’s Auto Service and also worked on tractors, lawn mowers, boat motors and pretty much anything that had a motor. He built and raced stock cars. He won many races and several track championships including 1968 and 1969 at Westside Raceway in Yankton, South Dakota. He was co-founder of Nostalgic Stock Car Racing Association. He was a Methodist. He was a member of the South Sioux City Eagles Club and a former member of the Civil Air Patrol. He was an avid bowler. Survivors include two sons: Lloyd Crain of Sioux City, Charlie and his wife Wendy Crain of Ackley, Iowa, a step-son Jerry and his wife Joan Gengler of Salix, Iowa, three daughters: Susan and her husband Steve VanBuskirk of St. Charles, Iowa, Karen and her husband Bruce Chalup of Cassville, Missouri, Diane Duvall of Kentucky, step-daughter Jodi and her husband Chris Mitchell of Olathe, Kansas, a brother-in-law Rev. John Gradwahl of Pierce, Nebraska, a sister Claribel Anderson of Wayne, Nebraska, 22 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters: Carol Jean Crain and Janice Beller and a sister Turena Gradwahl.
