Ronald D. Rapp, 72 of South Sioux City passed away at his residence on Sunday, May 5, 2013. Services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City with the Rev. Stephen Niles Officiating. Burial will be in the City Cemetery at Ponca, NE. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City with the family present. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Ron was born May 27, 1940 in Ottumwa, Iowa the son of George P. and Orpha (Church)Rapp. He moved with his family to South Sioux City in 1941. He attended school in South Sioux City and graduated in 1958. He then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated from there in 1962. During his time at UNL, he was a proud member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Ron married Jane Harris Skinner on August 25, 1963 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Together they made their home here and raised two sons. He was a co-owner of Church’s Market from 1962 until 1968. During the year of 1963 he enlisted in the 185th Air National Guard and served in active duty with the Air Force from August of 1968 through May of 1969 at Kwanju Air Force Base in Korea. In 1968 he began his career with New York Life and later resumed it when he returned from Korea. He received his Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) in 1976. Ron was a past member of the South Sioux City Jaycees and a current member of the Kiwanis Club where he was affectionately known as the “Pancake Man” for over forty years. He was a youth football coach for fifteen plus years and was also active in the “Chain Gang” for South Sioux City Cardinal Football. He was an active civic leader in the area. He served on the Siouxland Interstate Metropolitan Planning Council (SIMPCO) Board from 1967 to present and also served on the Planning and Zoning Board for South Sioux City from 1965 until his passing. He was active in the Tri-State Graduate Center and also served as President of Atokad for several years. Ron was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City where he served as an Elder, Deacon and most recently Corporation President. He was member in the church choir and also enjoyed singing with Choralation of Siouxland. Ron had a great love of many things. His family was his first and foremost passion. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and following them in their activities. Other hobbies included working in his garden, boating, fishing, hunting and cooking. He was an AVID Husker Fan and never missed a game whether in person or on television. Ron is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jane S. Rapp of South Sioux City, two sons George and Amy Rapp of Pataskala, Ohio and Robert and Michelle Rapp of South Sioux City and six grandchildren: Eric, Alex, Katie, Zachary, Linus and Ian Rapp. Memorials in his name may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, South Sioux City Community Foundation or Cardinal Education Foundation.
