Helen E. Conway, 99 passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013 at her home. Services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday at St. Paul United Methodist Church in South Sioux City with the Rev. Carol Jean Stapleton officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery in rural South Sioux City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the church. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Helen was born on September 9, 1914 at the farm home in South Sioux City to R. Guy and Bertha (Horton) Manning. She married C.P. “Pat” Conway on September 27, 1941 in Omaha. She proudly spent her entire life on Walker Island west of South Sioux City. Helen attended Walker Island elementary school and graduated from South Sioux City High School, class of 1932. She attended evening classes at NBT while working as a bookkeeper for various businesses, including the Dakota County Missouri River Bridge Company. Following the birth of her first child she became a full time homemaker, and an Extension Club member, 4-H leader, and school volunteer, while maintaining her passion for dancing to the Big Bands that played in the area. She later enjoyed working a window at Atokad Race Park. She served on the Dakota County Extension Board, secretary to the SSC Alumni Association, and Flower Superintendent at the county fair for many years. She was recently honored as an 88 year member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church. Helen is survived by R. Eugene “Gene” (Addie Jane) of Carrollton, TX,; Judith (Robert “Fritz”) Kluge, Fairbury, NE,; Gerald “Jerry” (Kathleen) of Wayne, NE,; Joe (Karen) of Lincoln, NE,; Jon (Susan) of South Sioux City,; Jeff (Julie) of Overland Park, KS,; 11 grandchildren: Kerianne Sue Kluge of South Sioux City,; Kendra (Eric) Silverstein of Sherman Oaks, CA,; Kaurene (Peter) Salts of Fairfield,CT,; Kreg Kluge of Louisville, KY,; Kiera Kluge of Oxford, CT,; Kailen Jo Kluge of Sherman Oaks, CA,;Jennifer (Tim) Koehler of Sioux Falls, SD,;Brendan Conway, Nolan Conway and Dylan Conway all of Lincoln and Aidan Conway of Overland Park, KS and six great grandchildren: Ashlyn, Patrick and Sierra Salts, Ethan Koehler, Kyle and Lily Silverstein. A sister: Elaine Strange of Cathedral City, CA and several cousins, nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Bertha, her husband “Pat” Conway on January 13, 1996 in Sioux City, her beloved stepmother Sue (Cobb) Manning and stepmother Elsie (Fullerton) Manning, two brothers: Kenneth Manning and Lloyd Manning, their spouses and a brother-in-law.
