Marian Thelma Horan

October 12, 1933 — December 28, 2013

Marian Horan, age 80 of South Sioux City, passed away Saturday, December 28, 2013 at a local nursing home. Visitation will be at 4:00 pm Thursday, January 2, with the family present from 6:00-8:00 pm at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, 204 East 15th Street, So. Sioux City. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, East 21st Street, So. Sioux City. Marian Thelma Queen was born October 12, 1933 in a farmhouse near Winnebago, Nebraska. She was the oldest child of Newell and Thelma (Stansberry) Queen. Marian had two sisters, Arlene and Sharlien, and two brothers, Ronald and Leo. Marian spent her early childhood in Walthill, NE. At a young age, her family moved to South Sioux City, NE, where she received her education. Her first job was as a checker at Church’s Grocery Store in South Sioux City. After years of voice lessons, Marian enjoyed singing while in high school and was an accomplished vocalist from an early age. She also enjoyed roller skating with the skating clubs. In 1951 Marian graduated from South Sioux City High School and was united in marriage to James T. Horan in 1953. The couple would be blessed with five sons, Dale, Gale, Mark, John, and Jim. Marian worked as a book keeper for the Dakota County Clerk’s Office in Dakota City, NE, L&L Builders in Sioux City, IA for several years, and RML Architects, even up to a few weeks ago. Marian had a very full and wonderful life with many varied interests, which included raising her beloved five sons and supporting them all during their sporting events and growing-up years. She also spent much of her time being an active part of the community and gracing many with her musical talents. Up until only a few weeks ago, she was still performing at nursing homes and other venues, sharing her lovely voice and bringing joy to all who heard her sing. Marian loved to entertain and hostess on the holidays and many wonderful, treasured memories of love and laughter have been shared with family and friends while at Marian’s house. Another interest of Marian has been to work hard outside of the home at her jobs. She still worked up to two weeks ago at the age of 80. We are all very proud of her work ethic. She also found happiness in sitting outside on her back patio listening to the birds or reading a good book. Marian’s greatest joy, though was time spent with her friends and family. She was a gracious, supportive and wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, or friend who opened her home and her heart to all. Those left to cherish Marian’s memory include: sons, Dale (Dianne) of Sioux Falls, SD, Gale (Judy) of Harrisburg, SD, Mark (Gale) of Sioux City, IA, John (Beth) of South Sioux City, NE, and Jim (Linda) of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Sarah Sedelmeier, Ben Horan, Adam Horan, Jennifer (David) Mallett, Nick (Kylie) Horan, Amy Horan, Nicole Horan, and Jayme Horan; great-grandchildren, Jonah Sedelmeier, Grace Sedelmeier, Miles Sedelmeier, and Kendyl Horan; brothers, Ronald Queen and Leo (Annette) Stansberry; nephews, Scott (Kerri) Walker and Joel (Jennifer) Walker; and numerous other relatives and friends. Marian is preceded in death by: her parents, Newell and Thelma; and two sisters, Arlene and Sharlien (Larry) Walker.
