Lyle D. Van Matre, 75 of rural Winnebago passed away Saturday Mach 22, 2014 at his residence. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Becker – Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City with Chaplain Ron Pietz officiating. Graveside military services will be in Omaha Valley Cemetery, rural Homer, Nebraska. Visitation at the funeral home will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m. Lyle was born May 11, 1938, in Winner, S.D. the son of Dannie N. and Marjorie (Hiserote) Van Matre. He served four years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany the same time as Elvis Presley. He married Sandra M. Quick June 2, 1961 in Winner, S.D. He was a foreman for Jansma Cattle Company in Rock Rapids, Iowa several years. He retired from Tyson Fresh Meats Inc in 2006. He was a longtime resident of rural Winnebago, was a cowboy at heart, a hard worker and would help anyone. He enjoyed going to coffee with his buddies and he loved to fish. Survivors include three sons: LeRoy and his wife Tria of Colorado, Bruce and Dannie both of Winnebago, a daughter Crystal and her husband Bill Thompson of Sioux City, a sister Ruby Betcher of Winner, S.D., grandchildren: Amber, Andrew, Nicholas, Meagan, Brittany, Haley, Bronson, D.J. and Ross Alan, 15 great grandchildren and his canine companions: Shorty Long Legs and Bugsy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sandra September 23, 2001 in Sioux City, and three brothers: Donald, Francis and Marlan. Pallbearers will be David Storms, Pat Hulit, Alvin Vavra, Jasper Certain, Gary Jensen and Gaylinn Bollig. Honorary pallbearers will be his coffee
