Wayne Eugene Shanks

Wayne Eugene Shanks, 87, of South Sioux City passed away Wednesday April 30, 2014, at a South Sioux City Care Center. Services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at Becker – Hunt Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Stockton officiating. Burial will be in the Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home will be from 4 to 8 P.M. Monday with a prayer service at 7 P.M. Wayne was born December 9, 1926, in South Sioux City the son of Eugene T. and Mabel L. (Cole) Shanks. He graduated from South Sioux City High School. He was a lifelong resident of South Sioux City. He married Darlene E. Guy March 27, 1964, in Pender, Nebraska. He was employed at Swift Packing for forty-two years and served as a city council member for several years. He was a member of the Omadi Masonic Lodge. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands: Bernetta and Alan Verley and Arlowene (Marple) and Larry Washburn all of South Sioux City, a brother Elvis (Janice) Shanks of Sioux City, a sister Sally (Donald) Epperson of Mountain Home, Arkansas, four grandchildren: Jerrid (Shannon) Washburn, Justin Washburn, Pam (John) Lerch, Joe Bailey and four great grandchildren: Amber Bailey, Claire, Evelyn and Lydia Washburn.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Darlene (June 19, 2007). Casket bearers will be: Fred Goreham, Rick Guy, Tony Barnes, Corby Elvis Barnes, Kelly Shanks and Dan Vanderheiden. Honorary casket bearers will be: Randy Barnes and Skylar Barnes.
