Christian "Chris" M. Miller

June 8, 1918 — June 26, 2014

         Christian Martin “Chris” Miller, 96 of Homer, Nebraska passed away Thursday June 26, 2014 at a South Sioux City Care Center. Services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Homer, Nebraska with Pastor Barb Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Green Valley Cemetery, rural Homer, Nebraska.  Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Monday with a prayer service at 7 P.M. all at the church.  Becker – Hunt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Chris was born June 8, 1918 in rural Homer, Nebraska the son of Marcus and Laura (Miller) Miller. He graduated from high school and attended one year of college. He married Selma L. Jensen March 8, 1941 in South Sioux City.             He was employed at the South Hubbard Telephone Company, a farm owned company, and was maintenance and president until it was turned over to the Bell Telephone Company and then  helped with  putting in the first underground line in Dakota County.             He was a 4-H Leader for fifteen years. He was a charter member of the Dakota County Agricultural Society in 1945. He was elected to the Dakota County Fair Board in 1956. He served as president from 1957until1974 including the years of joint Dakota and Thurston Counties Fair. He was a member of the Atokad Racing Association.  He was elected to Nebraska State Fair Board 1967 and served the longest of any member, thirty-six years. He was a Knights of Aksarben ambassador from 1978 until 1991.  He was named Fairman of the year in 1993. He and his wife Selma received a Gold Membership in The Nebraska State Fair Park Foundation.             He served on the County School District Sunnyside as board member and president and then on the consolidation board to transfer the Country Schools to Homer. He then served on the Homer School Board for three years.             He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, was president and served on the council from 1960 until 1966. He served as chairman on the church building committee from 2003 until 2006 helping with the new addition. He was a member of the University of Nebraska Beef Club since 1965.  He was a Knight of Aksarben ambassador 1978 to 1991 when he was appointed Ambassador Emeritus.             Survivors include two sons: Lynn Miller of Homer, Randy Miller of Lincoln, two daughters Susan and her husband Ray Brown of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and Cindy Miller of Lincoln.             He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Selma December 29, 2005 a daughter Nancy Jean Miller, a brother Edward, two sisters: Lona Larson and Frances Fischer and a grandson Shannon.
