Thelma J. “Short” Rice, 96 of South Sioux City, passed away Friday, June 26, 2015 at a Sioux City Hospital. Services will be 2 P.M. Monday at the Ho-Chunk Community Center in Winnebago, NE with Jim Snow officiating under the direction of the Winnebago Wake and Burial Service. Beckier – Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City assisted the family with arrangements. Burial will be in the Winnebago Indian Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 P.M. Saturday at the Ho-Chunk Community Center until service time Monday. Thelma Josephine was born February 5, 1919 in Winnebago, Thurston County, Nebraska the daughter of Joseph and Hazel (Lucart) Wilcox. She married Henry M. Rice. The couple lived in South Sioux City and Sioux City before moving to San Francisco, California in 1961 where she was employed at Sears as a tailor. They returned to Winnebago in 1973. She was then employed at Downtown Cleaners and the Goodwill in Sioux City. Her husband Henry died in November of 1973. She moved to Sioux City in 1973 and to South Sioux City in 2008. Survivors include three sons: John and his wife Carole of Atascadero, CA, Robert and his wife Wildine of Pleasant Hill, CA, Louis of Winnebago, NE, a brother Wallace “Wally” and his wife Bev Wilcox of Scottsdale, AZ, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son Melvin, a brother Harold, two sisters: Vivian Dains and Evelyn Rice, two grandchildren: David Rice and Lorie Rice, and one great grandchild Kyle Nez.
