Marvin L. Reuter

October 27, 1926 — July 22, 2015

Marvin Louie Reuter, 88 of South Sioux City, formerly of Allen, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Regency Care Center while surrounded by family. Services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City with Rev. Kelley Pedersen and a cousin of the family Rev. Marcille Jensen officiating. Burial with military graveside services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday at Becker – Hunt Funeral Home from 4to 8 P.M. with a prayer service at 7 P.M. Marvin was born October 27, 1926 to Louie and Anna (Swanson) Reuter at the farm home west of Allen, Nebraska. He was the only baby born in this house. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Concord. He attended Elementary School at Mt. Vernon Country School district No. 57 in Dixon County and High School in Allen, Nebraska. This was his first experience with the Hot Lunch Program in school which cost each child four cents per day. During High School he earned the first place award for best actor in the Dixon County One Act Play. His favorite pastime at this time was horseback riding with Bill Snyder, Gaylen Jackson, and Dale Dyson. What a wild time they had ! He started farming with his dad in 1944. In 1945 he was inducted into the U.S. Army and was stationed for overseas duty in the Philippines near Manilla at Camp Luzon in the South Pacific to guard Japanese War Criminals during World War II. He was awarded several medals including World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Independence Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. He was PFC in the 796th Military Police. He has been a member of the Allen American Legion Post Gleason #0131 for 50+ years. After the war, he resumed his farming career with his father. He married Mae Jensen in Randolph in 1950. To this union two children were born, a son, Loren and a daughter, Paula. Marvin and Mae lived on the family farm and farmed for 40- years, until they retired and moved to their present home in South Sioux City in 1990. At that time he transferred his church membership to First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City. Marvin has been an active church member throughout his life. To stay busy after retirement, he delivered automotive parts in the Siouxland area for an additional twenty years, then retiring a second time in 2012 at the age 86. He thoroughly enjoyed his job with Big A Auto, Napa, and Car Quest. He had a special interest in all kinds of automobile racing – stock car, sprint car, and Nascar. He enjoyed racing them, fixing them, financing them, and being a spectator ! Marvin would fondly recall the year when Speed Prescott and he built the fastest stock car in the Siouxland and Norfolk area ! After moving to South Sioux City, Marvin took special pride in taking care of his lawn. Many summers Marvin and Mae would travel taking in the sites of the beautiful mountains of Wyoming. Marvin loved to watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities and looked forward to their visits. Marvin and Mae celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in May of this year.   Marvin was a kind-hearted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was truly a one-of-a-kind person. He will be missed and remembered forever by many. Survivors include his wife, Mae and two children: Loren (Rhonda) Reuter of Allen, Nebraska, and Paula (Richard) Verzani of Ponca, Nebraska. Five grandchildren: Jason (Kristin) Reuter, Julee (Matt) Curry, Angee (Brad) Dorcey, Sarah (Al) Gentrup, and Nic (Ashly) Verzani. Eleven great-grandchildren: Coty, Cortney, Hannah, and Elizabeth Reuter, Nora Curry, Grace and Grant Dorcey, Leighton and McKenna Gentrup and Mary and Abby Verzani. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Louie and Anna Reuter, a brother, Reuben Reuter, a sister, Alice Steele, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to offer a special thank you to Hospice of Siouxland and their staff for their loving comfort and care. In lieu flowers the family request memorials be made to the First Lutheran Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
