Jack Eugene Hattig, Sr, 87 of South Sioux City passed away at his residence in South Sioux City, Nebraska on September 8, 2016. Services and burial with military rites will be in Guam at a later date. Becker – Hunt Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements Jack was born Dec 3, 1928 to Helena T. Salmon and John H. Hattig in Wausa, Nebraska. He was raised and schooled in Concord, Nebraska. He had six siblings, Leonard, Mildred, Willard, Larry, Earl and Marlene. On June 30, 1946 he joined the Seabees and served until April 29, 1948. He worked temporarily in the Saipan Power Plant as an electrical switchboard operator and engineman. At the end of his Seabee tour in April 1948, he was hired by a private company to join the reconstruction of Guam, living in the Naval Station barracks. When work was completed he entered the Federal Civil Service in 1951 at the U.S. Navy Public Works Center, Guam serving as switchboard operator, a dispatcher and later Superintendent of Utilities Power Division, retiring after 45 years. It was while working at PWC Power when he met his first wife, Antonia Quenga. Losing his first wife to cancer, he then married second wife Cecilia White and moved back to Nebraska, settling in at his parents’ home in South Sioux City. Again, losing his second wife to cancer, he then married third wife, Erlinda Lalog on Nov 26, 2008 in Dakota City. Jack was preceded in death by his parents John and Helena Hattig. First wife Antonia Quenga Hattig and second wife Cecilia White Hattig. Siblings Leonard Hattig, Mildred Lumongsud, Larry Hattig, and Earl Hattig. Grandson Daniel J. Torre, and sons-in-law Ronald Peterson and Anthony Mendiola. He is survived by third wife Erlinda Hattig, 8 children and 1 reared son/grandson, 12 step children, brother and sister, uncle and aunts and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, in-laws, nieces and nephews. Surviving children: Jack E. Hattig Jr., Daniel J. Hattig, John D. Hattig Sr. (Maria Duarte), Walter J. Hattig, Juanita L. Gumataotao (Richard Libby), Herbert G. Hattig (Marilyn Hattig), Keith W. Hattig Sr. (Delia Hattig), Merced Camacho Peterson and reared son (grandson) John D. Hattig Jr. Surviving step-children: Linda Sutton (David Sutton), Robert Quenga (Debra Quenga), George Quenga (Shirley Quenga), Judy Quenga, Donna Mendiola, Jacob Marple, Robert Whiteward, Ina Marple, Ida Marple, Charlyn Marple, Francis Flisco (Agnes Flisco) and Rose Flisco. Surviving siblings: Willard Hattig (Nancy Carey) and Marlene Johnson. Surviving companion: His poodle, ‘Pretty Boy Rusty’. Jack loved fishing and gardening. He enjoyed a lot of fishing first in Guam with his boys then with his brothers in between his trips from Guam to Nebraska. The last few years of his life, he travelled in Texas, Minnesota, and South Dakota fishing with brothers Leonard and Willard. He loved flowers and saw to it that he had the most beautiful array of flowers particularly tulips, hibiscus, zinnias and lilies in his garden. He also grew the best tomatoes and the largest zucchini which he boastfully shared with family and friends including the mail lady and the pastor.
