Paul R. Culbertson

   Paul R. Culbertson, 96, of rural Dakota City passed away Monday, November 21, 2016 at a South Sioux City Care Center.    Memorial services will be 7 P.M. Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Dakota City. Visitation with the family will be from 6 P.M. to service time, Tuesday at the church. Becker – Hunt Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.     Paul was born August 24, 1920 in Sioux City, Iowa the son of Horace D. and Marie (Bishop) Culbertson. He grew up on a farm west of Dakota city, NE where he spent the rest of his life farming the land his Great Grandfather purchased in 1860.    Paul was baptized in and a lifelong member of the Salem Lutheran Church. He graduated from South Sioux City High School and attended the University of Nebraska. He married Jean I. Olson of Winnebago, NE, on May 25, 1941. They had three children; Bruce born in 1942, Gary born in 1944 and Ingrid born in 1947.    Paul, “Mr. C” and his wife Jean loved to travel extensively, pilot an airplane and read good historical books. Paul served on the State Extension Board, County Extension Board, FSA Board for 17 years and was Farm Bureau President for many years. He was Dakota County Historical President and was active in the O’Connor House activities. He was served on the Salem Church Counsel and was also Sunday School Superintendent for 22 years. He served on the building committee for the Homer Community School, the Weed Board, the Dakota County Commissioner, and helped establish the Dakota Dixon County Dairy Breeders Association. Mr. C was instrumental in getting the Dakota County History book organized and printed. He was also one of the first Pioneers of minimum tillage farming in Dakota County.    Paul is survived by his daughter Ingrid and her husband Michael Bunker of Henderson, NV, grandson Mathew Costello and wife Jodi of Whidbey Island, WA, Christopher Costello and wife Nicole of Vancouver, WA, Brent Culbertson and wife Bobbi of Dakota City, NE, seven great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.    He was preceded in death by his wife Jean Culbertson in 2011, older son Bruce in 2003 and younger son Gary killed in Vietnam War in 1968. Honorary pallbearers will be Chuck Beermann, Dave Beermann, Jim Hubbard, Bryce Andersen, Bill Haafke and Tom Reed.    The family would like to express their gratitude to Annette Mast for all the loving care and time she spent with Mr. C. We are so blessed she is part of our family.    In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Salem Lutheran Church Choir, the Salem Lutheran Church Scholarship Found or Taylor Cemetery.
