Marty George Haugen

Marty George Haugen 39, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2016 at his residence from natural causes. Memorial services will be 6:30 P.M. Wednesday January 11, 2016 at Becker – Hunt Funeral Home with Alan Verley officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the funeral home. Marty was born November 5, 1977 in Sioux City the son of Bruce and Maxine Haugen. He graduated from South Sioux City High School. Marty loved sports and participated in Special Olympics from age 8 until his death. He competed in soccer at three Special Olympic World Games, representing Team Nebraska in 1991, 1995 and 1999. His soccer team won the National Special Olympics: he was also a coach and mentor in several sports. He was one of the first Global Messengers for Nebraska and was also on the board of directors for Special Olympics Nebraska at one point. Marty was well known as the guy who would always help in any way he could; he was a kind-hearted soul. Survivors include his parents, brothers; Dave Hicks and Shannon Haugen and his Special Olympic friends. A Marty Haugen Memorial Fund has been established at Siouxland Federal Credit to help purchase a marker for Marty’s grave.
