Raymond J. Nelson, 72 of Jackson, Nebraska passed away Sunday, July 16, 2017 at a local hospital. Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 22, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Jackson, Nebraska. Visitation will begin one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion Harty McNally Post 175 and the U.S. Army Honors Team. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Raymond John Nelson was born October 9, 1944 in Sioux City the son of Franklin I. and Dorothy G. (Goergen) Nelson. He was raised on the family farm near Jackson, NE and graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Emerson. Upon graduation he joined the US Army. He returned home to help his father with crops and to operate his dairy farm. Ray was known for his mechanical ability to fix anything that anyone brought out to his shop. After retiring from farming in the 90's, he worked as a driver for Meyers Pallets. Later in life he enjoyed tractor pulling with his brother Frank and was seldom seen without his companion “Buddy”. Ray was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Ronald J. (Jackie) Nelson of Mobile, AL, Timothy E. (Teri) Nelson of South Sioux City, David P. (Cristy) Nelson of Danbury, IA, and Catherine A. Nelson of Sioux City, two brothers Frank Nelson of South Sioux City, and Tom Nelson of Papillion, one sister, Marian Brown of Fremont, eleven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren with one on the way in September. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
