Roger D. Batien, 75, Dakota Dunes, SD, went home to be with his heavenly father on Sunday, October 14, 2018, while surrounded by family.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Rev. Darrin Vick and Rev. Janine Rew-Werling will officiate. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to

Roger was born on November 8, 1942 in Huron, S.D. to Floyd and Florence (McMillan) Batien. He grew up on the family farm near Carpenter, S.D. and graduated from Willow Lake, S.D. High School in 1960. After high school, Roger worked at the elevator in Willow Lake until he enlisted in the Army. Roger was sent to Vietnam where he contracted Malaria and was discharged. Upon returning home, he met and married Susan Bruns on February 16, 1968 in Willow Lake, SD. Roger then began a 36-year career with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, moving to several communities before making a home in Eureka, S.D. for 23 years. While in Eureka, Roger and Susan raised their two daughters, Melanie and Christy.
Roger was active in every community he lived in, always pitching in to help others. Throughout his life he served many organizations, including the Eureka Ambulance Crew, the American Legion, VFW, Lions Club, Food Bank of Siouxland, the Ronald McDonald House of Siouxland, and Northeast South Dakota Vietnam Veterans of America. With a deep faith, Roger served his church in every community he lived. He and Susan also helped charter Hosanna Lutheran Church in Watertown, S.D. in 2011.
In 2013, Roger and Susan moved to Dakota Dunes, S.D. to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents and youngest brother Jerry Batien. He is survived by his wife, Susan, daughters Melanie (Terry) Kudera of Clarkson, NE and Christy (Kevin) Clark of Sioux City, his granddaughters Ana and Mia, two brothers Roland (Dee) Batien of Gold Canyon, AZ and Lloyd (Sheryl) Batien of Wolsey, SD, a sister-in-law Cindy (Marlin) Warkenthien of Willow Lake, SD, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Siouxland, Food Bank of Siouxland and Hosanna Lutheran Church, Watertown, S.D.
