Richard J. Beehner, 81, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at a local care center.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Deacon Fred Karpuk officiating. Visitation with the family present will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
Richard J. Beehner was born on June 17, 1937 in Verdi, Minnesota to Clarence and Grace Beehner as an only child.
Richard spent time with his cousins on the country roads riding dirt bikes and working on the farm. In 1955 he joined the Navy serving in the Korea War. After being discharged he moved to Minneapolis to start his career with W.W. Grainger’s working in the warehouse then eventually moving into Sales.
In 1962 he met and fell I love with his future wife, Beverly. They married in 1964 and then moved to Sioux City in 1965. Richard devoted his time as a loving husband and raising his children. Summers were spent in Okoboji and traveling throughout the Midwest supporting his children in tennis.
As a talented carpenter, he and Beverly opened a store with several of his woodworking items; shelves, hutches and the famous “Welcome Ovals” that would be seen around Sioux City on several front doors. As his children moved away to be on their own, there were several trips visiting them in Seattle, Minneapolis or vacationing in the Cayman Islands relaxing on the beach and then grilling dinner with a cold beverage in his hand. His children always reached out to him for advice whether it was maintenance of their vehicles or just wanting to chat. He enjoyed rebuilding VW Beetles and traveling to different car shows.
In 2011, Beverly passed away from Breast Cancer at which time he moved in with John. Over the next seven years he fought hard with Alzheimer’s. Never did he let the disease take his spirit or personality. He lead everyday with a big smile and lots of laughter and if it included a few ice cream cones or cookies the day was even better.
The family would like to thank everyone at PACE and the VA for providing him the assistance he needed to live at home with John. Richard passed away being surrounded by Tami, John and Lori and their countless hours of attention and support
