Michael Lewis Albert was born on July 22, 1938, in Sioux City, Iowa. He was the eldest of the three sons of David J. Albert and Lucyle nee Barrent.
Mike was raised in Sioux City, where he attended Sioux City Central High School and was surrounded by an extended family. Mike graduated from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1960, at which time he moved with his wife Anita nee Matalon, whom he met and married while at Penn, to her hometown of Kingston, Jamaica. While in Kingston, Mike and Anita welcomed two children, Deborah and Mark. Sadly, in 1964, Anita died of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 22. Shortly thereafter, Mike returned to the U.S. with his young children and ultimately settled in Omaha, where he established his own food brokerage business, Michael Albert, Inc.
In 1967, Mike married Rita nee Hirsch of Chicago, with whom he welcomed their son David in 1969.
Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, Mike grew his business and became one of the leading food brokers in the Midwest. During this time, Mike also became intimately involved in local politics as an advocate for senior citizens and union employees. He was elected five times to the Douglas County Board, and during his tenure, he often served as Chairman.
Mike and Rita’s marriage ended in 1979, and in 1981, Mike married fellow bridge player Mary nee Egan. In 1995, Mike sold his firm and focused on his passion, contract bridge. Mike was a Grand Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League.
Mike was preceded in death by his first wife Anita, his parents, and his brother Burton.
He is survived by his children: Deborah Albert of Greenwich, CT, Mark Albert of Los Angeles, CA, and David Albert (Lauren) of New York, NY; his brother Neil Albert (Kim) of Boston, MA, his nephew Jason Albert (Katie) of the San Francisco Bay Area, CA, his niece Eliza Albert of Boston, MA; and nine grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.
