Melvia V. Denney

May 16, 1937 — August 14, 2018

Melvia Veloia Denney was born on May 19, 1937 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She was the 2nd daughter born to the union of Lorena Jane (Collins) and Weathers Henry Denney.

The family relocated to Sioux City in the 1950s to pursue job opportunities. Melvia attended Franklin Elementary and Woodrow Wilson Schools. She was employed at Wincharger Corporation. In 1953 an epic flood closed the company and Melvia then found new employment within IBP where she remained 37 years until her retirement in 2002.

Melvia made sure that her nieces and nephews regularly attended church, sang in the choir, and were involved in youth activities. She loved to bake cakes for all and any church functions. Melvia also served on the Mother’s Board. She was a faithful and devoted member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church until it closed. Melvia continued to worship with other former church members at other various locations in the Siouxland area. She also was a part of a prayer group that visited local nursing homes sharing song, praise, and fellowship. She did this until her health limited her ability to do so. This group of devoted members then began to visit Melvia to share in song and praise, which she truly cherished. Melvia looked forward to their visits.

On the morning of August 14, 2018, Melvia Veloia Denny entered in to her final rest. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Reverend Daryl Webb will officiate. Visitation will begin at 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Logan Park Cemetery.

Melvia was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Candy Mae Kern and Gonzella Denney.

Melvia will be cherished forever by her sister Patricia; cousins Bertina Bell and Hernietta Page; many nieces, and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Melvia was a gentle soul who was always there to lend a helping hand. She remains a faithful servant of the Lord. Melvia is truly missed by us, her family, and many friends.
