Bruce P. Whittier, 82, of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2018. A memorial mass will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Holy Cross Parish St. Michael. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 15, 2018 with family present from 5 to 7 P.M. with a vigil service at 7 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
Bruce was born the son of Stanley and Anne (Dowling) Whittier on April 22, 1936 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After high school, he honorably served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War as a radio operator. He married Lorraine Gerlach on June 20, 1959 in Elk Grove, Wisconsin.
Bruce worked for International Harvester in offices at Duluth and St. Paul, Minnesota and Sioux City. He then worked for Missouri Valley Steel until his retirement.
He enjoyed sailing, fishing, camping, and golfing. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved attending all of their events and activities. Bruce liked all sports. He was an avid Vikings fan.
Bruce was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Lorraine Whittier of Sioux City; four children, Greg (Priscilla) Whittier of Athens, Alabama, Dave Whittier of Bayfield, Wisconsin, Kris (Doug) Weeks of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and Amy (Jim) Sobaski of Sioux City, Iowa; one brother, Terry Whittier of Vietnam; and seven grandchildren, Broderick (Christina) Whittier, Olivia Whittier, Nathanael Whittier, Emily (Austin) Cleveringa, Riley (Mindy) Weeks, Evrett Sobaski, and Lauren Sobaski.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jeffrey; and brother, Kingsley.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to masses at Holy Cross St. Michael, the Heelan Drama Department, or Holy Spirit Retirement Home.
