Roger was born the son of Wenzel and Elizabeth (Steinbach) Gruber on January 9, 1941 in Alton, Iowa. Roger married Luanna Swanson on September 27, 1975 in West Des Moines, Iowa. After their marriage they made their home in Sioux City and were the proud parents of two children, Judson and Gretchen.

Roger was in sales for over 30 years in the Siouxland area before his retirement.

Roger loved fishing just about anywhere, duck hunting with his best friends at their pond in Whiting, and watching Nascar and Hawkeye basketball. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a gentle giant who could tell the best stories and always make people laugh. Roger never knew a stranger.

He was a member of Sunnybrook Community Church. He honorably served his country in the United States Navy.

Roger is survived by his wife, Luanna Gruber of Sioux City; two children, Judson (Denise) Gruber of Mission, Kansas and Gretchen (Adam) Wheelock of Sioux City; and four grandchildren, Griffin and Fiona Gruber and Leo and Nola Wheelock.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Carl, and one sister, Anita.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Roger’s name to the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center.
