Bonnie Gay Martin, of North Sioux City, SD, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 27, 2018 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa with Rev. Laurice Streffler and Rev. Kathy Martin officiating. Visitation with the family present will be held one hour prior at the Church. Arrangement are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Bonnie Gay Martin was born January 4, 1932, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Celia (Cole) Asmussen. She attended grade school at Hawthorne and then Leeds High School graduating in 1949. She was involved in many school activities, her favorite being music. She sang in the choir, played bass viola in the orchestra, band and symphony. She was a baton twirler from 7th – 12th grade. Her love for sports she played basketball for the Mary Tregilla community house because at that time the Sioux City Schools didn’t have girls basketball. She was a swimmer and took her life saving at the YMCA at the age of 14. She lifeguarded at the Methodist Church Camp at Okoboji and the camps at Crystal Lake. She had a pool in her backyard and had all of her grandchildren swimming at the age of 2.
Bonnie owned and operated her own beauty shop in Leeds for 29 years as well as a shop in a local nursing home. Her jobs after high school; she was a secretary for A.Y. McDonald then after retiring she worked at: Owl Springs Western Wear, Destiny Marketing, Local Sports Source, and Four Seasons Health Club. Bonnie was active in many community organizations. She served as President and Secretary of the Leeds Commercial Club, Hawthorne PTA, and the Leeds Bowling Association. She held many offices in Wesley Church, as well as United Methodist Women, she taught Sunday school, Bible School and was liturgist. She did children time at her church at the regular services for 11 years which she loved. Bonnie was a member of Wesley Church for 70 years. She was also active with Brownies, Girl Scouts, Future Homemakers, Y Teens, Republican Committee women, she was a Rainbow Girl, and served as Mother Advisor, receiving the Grand Cross of Colors. She and her husband Jim love ballroom and square dancing. She was a 50-year member of the Silver-Azure Chapter of Eastern Star. She held many offices in the local chapter, Past Matron, District Instructor and was elected to serve Iowa Grand Chapter as Worthy Grand matron in 1984, serving 46,000 members. Her gracious manner of welcoming officials and visitors demonstrated her love for the order but even in her daily life she was known by many acts of kindness, forbearance, and understanding. The important mark that never leaves her was her beautiful smile.
She gave so many gifts to others and not all were wrapped and tied with colored ribbons. She always gave gentle words and thoughtful deeds, smiles that quickly spread to other faces, a quiet understanding of others needs, and a willingness to help in any way she could. She always said she would never be rich because she would rather give to others. She never neglected her children; she never missed anything they were in. Her children always came first. Now her grandchildren and great grandchildren come first.
Survivors include her children: Craig Martin (Kathy) of Sioux City, IA, Rox Ann Millage (Stan) of Dakota Dunes, SD and Tally Baldwin (Jim) of McCook Lake, SD. Grandchildren: Steve Blackwell (Lane) of Colony, TX, Mandy Williams (Brian) of Colorado Springs, CO, Craig James Martin (CJ) (Britttany) of Sioux City, IA, James Martin (Samantha) of Sioux City, IA, Ryan Millage of Omaha, NE, Sadie Reifenrath (Ray) of Dakota Dunes, SD, Courtney Niles (Matt) of Dakota Dunes, SD, Landon Smith (Josie) of North Sioux City, SD, Cale Smith of McCook Lake, SD, Breanna Baldwin of Sioux City, IA, and Kelsey Montange (Levi) of Sergeant Bluff, IA; Great Grandchildren: Katelin and Cade Blackwell, Henry Metz, Bryson & Brandon Williams, Timmy McFarland Stewart, Mya and Kylee Millage, Ella Rae Reifenrath, Jacob Niles, Eleanor Smith, Torrie, Ashton and Canyon Baldwin, Charlotte and Roslyn Montange; Bonnie is also survived by her brothers: Neal Asmussen (Sharon), Tom Asmussen (Jeanie); Sisters: Zana Johnson (Roy), Nancy McBride; and her In-Laws: JoAnn Carozza, and Marge Martin.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband James, her parents, Celia & Ed Asmussen, mother and father in law, Clyde and Alma Martin, brother-in-laws, Jim McBride, Mike Carozza, Vincent Stroup, Merle, Pat, Dwayne, Dick and Donnie Martin. Sister-in laws, Vera, Gwen and Marie Martin and Yvonne Stroup. She has numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and her special one’s Jim and Hope McBride.
In Lieu of flowers, the family prefer memorials be directed to Wesley Methodist Church.
