Matt Uhl

June 20, 1979 — July 9, 2018

Matthew Adam Uhl age 39, passed away Monday, July 9, 2018.  A private celebration of life will be held Friday, July 13, 2018.

Matt was born on June 20, 1979 in Sioux City, IA, the son of Rich and Sheryl (Owens) Uhl. After graduating high school from Westwood in Sloan, Matt joined the Air Force and served overseas during the Iraq War. Matt went on to receive his criminal justice degree from Briar Cliff University. While in college, he was a member of ROTC through USD and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army National Guard. While in the Guard, he again served his country in Afghanistan. After his discharge, Matt pursued a military intelligence position with a private contractor working in Afghanistan. He returned to the Sloan area and worked alongside his family at Uhl Seed, Inc. until his death.

Matt was a great outdoorsman, video gamer, and sports enthusiast. He lived life to the fullest and looked for challenges he could conquer head on. Matt enjoyed competing, but he especially enjoyed the bantering and laughs with teammates. Matt loved to travel and visited numerous countries around the world. He loved deeply and intensely protected family and friends. Even in his death, his wish to help others continued through organ, bone and tissue donation.

He is survived by his parents, Rich and Sheryl (Owens) Uhl of Sloan, IA; his sister and brother-in-law Amy and Eric Roesler; two nieces, Megan and Kendra; grandparents, Betty and Wilfred Uhl, and Ralph Owens; his former fiancé; Gina Gentile-Turner and her daughter, Morgan, with whom he had a special bond and loved as if she was his own daughter. Also left to cherish his memory are numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; many friends from childhood, sports teams, and his military service.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Maxine Owens.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Matt’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project with acknowledgement sent to Rich and Sheryl Uhl, 316 Cedar St. Sloan, IA 51055.

Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
