Michael W. Merrigan, Sr.

December 14, 1938 — June 27, 2018

Michael W. Merrigan, Sr., 79, passed into the arms of Jesus at his home on Wednesday, June 27, 2018. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, July 6, 2018 at the Church of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Visitation will be Thursday, July 5, 2018 from 4 to 8 P.M. with family present from 6 to 8 P.M. and a Vigil service at 7 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Burial will be at a later date.

Mike was born on December 14, 1938, in Sioux City to Walter and Charlotte Merrigan, who raised him and his older surviving sister Patricia (Wiltgen). Mike graduated from Heelan High School as part of the class of 1957. He married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Rosie Wiltgen, on April 19, 1958. He worked for Metz Baking for 30 years where he was also a member of the Teamsters Union. Following retirement from Metz, Mike spent the next 20-plus years in the golf business, starting with Green Valley and Floyd Golf courses in Sioux City. He was proudest of his tenure at Whispering Creek Golf Course where he was part of the initial staff and was known for his exceptional customer service.

Mike was an avid golfer for most of his life, with a handicap that got as low as 8 at one time. He also had 4 hole-in-ones. However, his first love was coaching, and he is best known to a generation of his players as "Coach." He spent nearly a decade coaching football, basketball and track at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, where his teams won multiple championships.

Grateful for having shared his life are his surviving wife, Rosie and their five children, Mike Merrigan Jr., and his wife Colleen, of Springfield, Missouri; Lorie Beckman of Sioux City; Andy Merrigan and his wife Suzi of Sioux City; Randy Merrigan of Sioux City; and Teresa Ward and her husband Joe, of Des Moines, Iowa. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He will be missed. We love you more, Dad.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that any gifts be made to the Junior Golf Program at Whispering Creek Golf Course in his name.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his Aunts, Dr. Margaret Avery and Edna Kirwan; and an Uncle, Bud LaBreck.
