Marjorie V. Newton, 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 2, 2018 in Albuquerque, NM. She was born on October 7, 1923 in Geddes, SD. Marjorie was the youngest of six children and graduated from Geddes High School.
Marjorie married her husband, Don, in Sioux City, IA on May 25, 1943 where they later settled after Don returned from his service in WWII. When her children were young, Marjorie worked for Wincharger Corporation in Sioux City, Iowa. She was active in the PTA and was a Cub Scout leader. After her husband’s retirement, the couple worked together part time at various events at the Sioux City Auditorium and the Orpheum Theater. Some of her favorite events included the Abu Bekr Shrine Circus and the Sioux City Musketeer hockey games.
Marjorie was a founding member of Westlawn Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder, a Deacon, and as an officer in the Mariners. She was active in Presbyterian Women (PW) and also enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Bible School. After moving to Albuquerque in 2004, Marjorie became a member of Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed working at the bake sale at the annual Chile Fest.
Marjorie was an avid gardener and enjoyed putting puzzles together. She loved traveling with her husband in their motor home and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and friends.
Marjorie is survived by her sons, Dennis L. Newton and Derald W. Newton and his wife, Wendy; her grandchildren, Donald C. Newton III, Michael Newton, Michelle McClain, Melanie Glasrud, Renee Gozzoli, Mattias Newton, Amy Newton, David Newton, and Darin Newton; nine great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Mattias Lindgren; her husband, Donald C. Newton; four sisters, Pauline Lindgren (who died as an infant), Ina Lindquist, Hilma Ball, and Ella Shroll; her brother, Alvin Lindgren; her son, Donald C. Newton II; and her daughter, Vivian Newton-Crofts.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Westlawn Presbyterian Church, 2521 W 4th Street. Following a reception at the church, a graveside service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
