Richard A. "Dick" Champ

October 12, 1937 — June 2, 2018

Richard A. “Dick” Champ, 80, of Sioux City passed away on Saturday, June 2, 2018. A funeral mass will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, June 8, 2018 at Holy Cross Parish Blessed Sacrament. Visitation will be 3-8 P.M. Thursday, June 7, 2018 with the family present 5-8 P.M., and a Vigil and Knights of Columbus service beginning at 7 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. 

Dick was born October 12, 1937 in Arkansas City, Kansas, the son of Delbert and Dorothea (Jehle) Champ. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School in Council Bluffs in 1955, and graduated from Creighton University with a Bachelor's degree in 1959. On December 27, 1958, he married Gloria Sweeney in Mitchell, South Dakota at Holy Family Catholic Church.

After graduating from Creighton, Dick worked at the Holdrege (Neb.) Daily Citizen for nine months before returning to Council Bluffs, where he became the Sports Editor of the Nonpariel. They spent three years in Council Bluffs before moving to Sioux City in 1963, where they remained and raised their children.

Dick was a sports copy editor and writer at the Sioux City Journal for 41 years, from 1963 until his retirement in 2004. While at the Journal, he was a proud member of the Sioux City Newspaper Guild and served as Secretary-Treasurer for many years.

He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, traveling by train, and listening to country music. He also enjoyed attending various sporting events, concerts, and theater productions in both Sioux City and Omaha.

Dick was a devout Catholic. As an active member of Holy Cross Parish Blessed Sacrament, he served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Greeter. He was a charter member of the Monsignor Newman Flanagan Council 11038 of the Knights of Columbus as well as a 4thDegree member of the Garrigan Assembly of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Champ of Sioux City; four sons, Christopher (Beth) Champ of Fort Worth, TX; Andrew (Tonia) Champ-Doran of Kingston, NY; Michael (Judy) Champ of Las Vegas, NV; and Mark (Tricia) Champ of Georgetown, TX; one daughter, Beth (John) Dimig of Lakeside, IA; one sister, Janice (Fred) Gill of Council Bluffs, IA; sister-in-law, Peggy Champ of Council Bluffs, IA; 10 grandchildren, C.J. Champ, Tanner Champ, Noah Champ, Carter Champ, Quentin Champ-Doran, Bellanora Champ-Doran, Pauline Champ, Sarah Dimig, Douglas Dimig, and Jennifer Dimig; and several nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Bernard and Hazel Sweeney; one brother, Gerald Champ; brother-in-law, Roger Higgins; and sister-in-law Donna Higgins.
