Lauretta Grove

Lauretta Grove, 93 of Sioux City, passed away on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at her residence. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Westlawn Presbyterian Church with Reverend Paul Speidel officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation, with the family present, will be at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning at the church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting the family.

Lauretta was born on October 30, 1924 in Rapid City, South Dakota to Edwin and Henrietta (Havens) Gordon. The family moved to Sioux City in 1928 where Lauretta graduated from Central High School with the Class of 1943. She married Robert “Bob” Slothower on July 24, 1944 to which four sons were born. Bob passed away in 1952. Lauretta was a strong member of the Westlawn Presbyterian Church being the chairman of the Women’s Association, Skipper of the Mariners, and member of the Session and Board of Deacons. She married Elmer Grove on November 26, 1953. The family moved to California between 1954 to 1959, before returning to Sioux City.

Lauretta was employed by Olson’s Sporting Goods in the knitting department before working at the Sioux City Grain Exchange, and Lazy Daisy (the knitting shop). She taught knitting and crochet at Western Iowa Tech for 20 years in the evening. Lauretta was a past member of the Red Hat Crimson Glories. In addition to her needlework, she enjoyed traveling, swimming, and her card group.

Lauretta is survived by her children Robert and his wife Linda Slothower of Omaha, Nebraska, James and his wife Elizabeth Slothower of Denham Springs, Louisiana, Gordon and his wife Linda Slothower of Springdale, Arkansas, and Steven Grove of Sioux City; grandchildren Bob Slothower, Paula Bowyer, Dave Slothower, Diann Strong, Jim Slothower Jr., Jonathan Slothower, and Amy Kissner; 11 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Lauretta was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and brothers Jack, Don and Dick Gordon.
