James Patrick Sweeney

James Patrick Sweeney, 60, of McLean, VA formally of Sioux City passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 28, 2018.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Visitation with the family present will be held from 9:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Jim was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1958 in Sioux City, the son of James E. and Joan Sweeney. Jim grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. A standout athlete, he walked on at Iowa State University’s football program, eventually earning a full-ride scholarship from Coach Earl Bruce.
Following Iowa State University, Jim received a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Dakota, a Master of Taxation from Drake University, and a Doctor of Business Administration/Accounting from Nova Southeastern University.
At the time of his death, Jim resided in McLean, Virginia and Trinity, Florida. He was a Partner at RSM US LLP, and the National Leader of Exempt Organization Technical Tax Services, serving some of the nation’s and world’s largest and most name recognizable tax exempt organizations. Jim once sat on a committee that translated the Internal Revenue Code to Congress. He also provided tax return review and technical substantiation for vice presidential candidates.
Jim was the co-author of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Not-for-Profit Tax Compliance program, as well as an adjunct professor and technical lecturer at many colleges and universities. He was known to many as the smartest individual you could ever meet and traveled the world imparting his knowledge.
Jim was incredibly bright, funny and sweet. Having three younger sisters, he grew up to be an extremely patient man. Jim never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He lived life to its fullest and did it his way. Jim was a remarkable man and will be greatly missed.
Jim loved his wife of 20 years, Lynn of Trinity, Florida; his proud parents, James E. and Joan of Sioux City, Iowa; and would do anything for his sisters, Teresa (James) Niederhauser of West Des Moines, Iowa; Lisa Rossi of Sioux City, Iowa; Kristina (Raymond) Smalling of Seattle, Washington; as well as his 10 nieces and nephews; one great niece; and one great nephew.
He was proceeded in death by his grandparents, Clifford and Pearl Sweeney of Sioux City, Iowa; Achim and Mary Simon of Sioux City, Iowa; and many aunts and uncles.
Sleep with the Angels, Jimmie. You will forever live in our hearts and souls.
