Joan E. Ellickson

December 28, 1949 — April 20, 2018

Joan E. Ellickson, 68, of Sioux City, passed away Friday, April 20, 2018 after a lengthy illness and hospital stay. Visitation will be at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25 with a prayer service beginning at 7. Family will be present from 6-8. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 26 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Joan was born the daughter of Fredrick and Anna Marie (Arnold) Rabe on December 28, 1949 in Denison, Iowa. She graduated from Denison High School in 1968 and went to Concordia in St. Paul to further her studies. After her schooling, she moved to Sioux City where she made her permanent residence. Joan was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where she married John Ellickson on July 25, 1981 and had three children: Jill, James, and Joseph. Joan worked as a physical therapy technician at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and later as a teacher’s aide at St. Paul’s Lutheran School. She always went out of her way to help other people.

Joan was an incredibly compassionate person whose faith in God was evident every time you encountered her. She loved spending time with her family, friends, and pets. She absolutely adored her grandchildren and always found new and fun things for everyone to try. Joan enjoyed scrapbooking, bowling, cooking/baking, traveling, crafts, old cars, puzzles, and playing games.

Joan is survived by her husband, John Ellickson of Sioux City, IA; one daughter, Jill (Adam) Orban of Glenwood, IA; two sons, James Ellickson of Sioux City, IA and Joseph Ellickson of New Hope, MN; one brother, Arnold (Shirley) Rabe of Mt. Pleasant, IA; one sister, Mary Seck of Bowie, TX; and four grandchildren, Owen, Ethan, Natalie, and Isaac.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister in infancy, Gloria.
