Gary William Garrels, 70, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at his residence.
Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday, March 12, 2018 at St. Boniface Worship Site. Visitation will be Sunday, March 11, 2018 from 4-8 P.M. with the family present from 6-8 P.M. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
Gary was born September 4, 1947 in Sioux City, the son of Lyle and Bonita (Stortz) Garrels. He graduated from Heelan High School in 1965. Gary enlisted in the United States Army Reserve for six years. He married Helen Tompkins on February 10, 1973. To this union, two daughters were born. The couple later divorced.
Gary held various positions prior to entering the telecommunications field. He worked for MCI for many years before retiring. Gary enjoyed fishing and was very involved in the racing community. He worked as a flagman at Park Jefferson and Raceway Park. His greatest love was spending time with family and friends.
Gary is survived by his daughters: Nicole (Craig) Johnson of Sioux City and Natalie Garrels of Sioux City; sisters: Dianne Warren of Council Bluffs, IA, Rhonda (Clarence) Kneebone of Jefferson, SD, Lannie (Dave) Eidenshink of Sioux City, and Debbie (Dave) Garrison of Kansas City, MO; many nieces and nephews; ex-wife Helen Garrels; and “The Boys”: Bailey and Kahlua, Gary’s dogs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Pam Claussen, and life partner Susan Winters.
