Lucille A. Matthey, 84, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa passed away peacefully Saturday, March 3, 2018.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 9th, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa. The Very Rev. Michael Erpelding will officiate. Burial will be in Salix Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a Rosary recited at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, 3220 Stone Park Blvd., Sioux City, Iowa 51104. Lucille was born March 21, 1933, in Arthur, North Dakota, the daughter of Edmund and Myrtle (Jensen) Mergner. Lucille grew up in Arthur and graduated from Arthur High School in 1951. She became a K-8 grade school teacher and taught in a rural school in North Dakota.
On October 4, 1952, Lucille married Allyn G. Matthey in Anchorage, AK, while he was in the Air Force. The family moved to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa in 1961 and began farming in 1968.
Lucille was a member of St. Joseph Parish, in Salix, Iowa. After her husband died in 1983, Lucille became a farm manager for many years. She was active in Toastmasters, Red Hat Society and PEO. She served as the co-chair of the Woodbury County Republican Party. She was a 4-H leader, receiving the 4-H Hall of Fame award for 60 years of service and assisted at the Woodbury County Fair for many years. She was named the Wallace Master Farmer of Iowa and a Women of Excellence Award winner. She served as president of Woodbury County Farm Bureau.
Lucille was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren on the farm, raising horses, and working in the fields.
Survivors include seven children, Paula Tott (Tim) of Sioux City, IA., Bruce Matthey (Karen) of Dakota Dunes, SD., David Matthey (Tammy) of Sergeant Bluff, IA., Michael Matthey of Sergeant Bluff, IA., Phillip Matthey (Kristin) of Lansing, MI., Anne Mackey (Patrick) of San Diego, CA., and Alison Matthey (Chris Dwight) of Laguna Beach, CA.; 18 grandchildren, Jeff Tott (Ashlee), Lindsay Buthe (Tim), Neil Matthey (Jenna), Kayla Tatroe (Randy), Cara Anderson (Craig), Ashley Hansen (Kip), Chris Tott (Tiffany), Lexie Throne (Storm), Justin Brown, Daniel Tott, Alec Pigott, Gunner Matthey, Corey Matthey, Audrey Mackey, Madison Pigott, Lauren Matthey, Calan Matthey, and Jack Pigott; nineteen great-grandchildren; two sisters Elaine of Fargo, ND., Marion of Phoenix, AZ.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, and two brothers.
A memorial has been established in Lucille’s honor.
