Bill was born Dec. 4, 1927 in Fairfax, MO the son of William A. and Mildred (Duncan) Conaway. He grew up on farms in Missouri and Wyoming. Bill attended country schools and helped on the farm until quitting school at 15 to help his dad full time. Bill later moved to the Kingsley, IA area and worked as a hired man for Nelse and Roy Mathers. He thought highly of the Mathers family and considered them second parents.

Bill met and married Blanche Woods of Kingsley in 1950 and moved to Sioux City starting work for a Standard Oil service station. Around 1955 Bill bought his first gravel truck and hauled gravel for the county thus starting his lifelong career in the trucking business. He then bought a semi and started hauling meat and produce for Hirschbach Motors. Bill stopped trucking for a short while and operated heavy equipment and was a diesel mechanic. He met his partner, Karl Hartman working on Karl’s trucks when working for Sioux City Truck Sales. Karl offered Bill the opportunity to get back into trucking in 1968 and in 1969 Bill bought into and grew the business with Karl. Bill operated the trucking business hauling feed and grain for Kay Dee and liquid fertilizer for Nutra Flo retiring in 1994.

Bill enjoyed coffee and talking to his many friends in Kingsley.  He enjoyed life and was blessed with good health and opportunity to boat and water ski, fly planes, ride motorcycles, snowmobiles, camping and whatever else he thought was fun. Some of his best times were riding motorcycles until he was in his eighties with his son, Gary and grandson, Chad.
