Laura H. Sanders, 74, of Sioux City, Iowa passed away Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 in Sioux City, Iowa. Services will be 11:00am Thursday, February 22nd at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Cornell Sudduth Sr. (Jefferson City, Missouri) officiating. Visitation will be 4pm-8pm at Meyer Brothers Funeral Home 3220 Stone Park Blvd. Family will be present from 6pm-8pm with prayer service at 7pm. Burial will be at Logan Park Cemetery. 

Laura was born July 7th, 1943 in Omaha, NE to Clarence McDavid and Florence (Johnson-English) Alston. Laura relocated to Sioux City, Iowa at the age of 2. She attended Sioux City public schools graduating from Central High School and completed collegiate studies with the equivalent of a Master of Arts in Sociology in San Francisco, California.

On February 14th, 1982 she was united in marriage to Lawrence R. Sanders of Oakland, California.
Laura accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at Mt. Sinai Holiness Church in 1967 under the leadership of Frankie Q Roberts. She later became a member of Mt. Zion Church for a total of 40 years. She was an active bible study teacher and board member of H.E.L.P. Outreach Ministries of Sioux City.

Laura’s professional career began as Program Director of the Sanford Community Center from 1970-1974. She was hired as the first African-American woman by the City of Sioux City as the Equal Employment Officer from 1974-1976. She relocated to the California Bay area and did several years of volunteer service. She returned to the workforce in 1982 in Sioux City, Iowa as the Director of the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) until 1988. She was employed once again by the City of Sioux City as Booking Manager for the Sioux City Convention Center from 1988-1992. Laura retired from her professional career at Western Iowa Tech as an instructor for Adult English Education.

Laura exemplified great strength and leadership as a Civil Rights Activist, past member of the N.A.A.C.P., former commissioner for the Sioux City Human Rights Commission, and served on numerous boards for women and minority rights.

She is survived by her husband Lawrence of Sioux City, two brothers Frank Johnson II and his wife Yowanda of Denver, Colorado; Raymond Johnson of Sioux City; a son Eric Sudduth of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughters Aleesha Barthelemy and husband Bethel of Sioux City; Monique Scarlett and husband Donald of Sioux City; Celeste Sudduth-Triplett of Sioux City & Carmell Sudduth of Sioux City; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great- grandchildren; and beloved nephews, nieces, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 daughters (Stephanie, Charice & Camylle); and 1 loving sister Donna Garrison.

Pallbearers will be Terrance Reynolds, Leland Scarlett, D’Metrik Rainey, DaRon Triplett, Xavier Scarlett, and Jory Barthelemy. Honorary pallbearers will be Eric Sudduth, Darius Triplett, Bethel Barthelemy, Donald Scarlett, Carlos Ridley Sr., and Robert Ford.
