June 28, 1936 — February 8, 2018

Darlene A. Dickes, 81 of South Sioux City, Nebraska passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at a Sioux City hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 15, 2018 at The Cathedral of the Epiphany with The Very Reverend Brent Lingle and Father Andrew Galles concelebrating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be this evening, Wednesday, February 14, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present at 6:00 p.m.

Darlene was born in Remsen, Iowa, on June 28, 1936, to Martin and Evelyn (Galles) Pottebaum. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Remsen, and went on to attend Briarcliff University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. She then graduated from the University of South Dakota with her Masters of Arts in Elementary Education in 1970.

On September 2, 1957, Darlene married John Dickes at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City. The couple spent the majority of their marriage in Sioux City, having only recently moved to South Sioux City, Nebraska.

Darlene taught at St. Joseph’s School for two years, then transferred to the Sioux City Public Schools where she taught for 29 years. During that time, she taught at McKinley, Sunnyside, and East Middle Schools.

Darlene enjoyed playing cards, gardening, and going on cruises with groups of her friends.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, John, of South Sioux City, NE; 4 children: Suzanne (Mike) Dailey of South Sioux City, NE, Gary (Marilyn) Dickes of Kenosha, WI, Steve (Pat) Dickes of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Judy (Maurice) Mouchawar of Lafayette, CO; 9 grandchildren: Michael Dailey, John Dailey, Jacob Clearfield, Mandy Germain, Katie Carlisle, Sarah Dickes, Jenny Dickes, Thomas Mouchawar, and Molly Mouchawar; and one great-grandchild, Tommy Clearfield.

Darlene is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Cy Pottebaum; and 2 sisters, Janice McGinnis and Suzanne Pottebaum.
