Clara Anne Rouse was born to Chester and Florence (Gerlich) Rouse on. Oct.19, 1925 in Hopkinton, IA. She would be the 2nd oldest in a family of 10 children. The family moved to Oxford Junction, IA and later to Clarence, IA. Anne graduated from High School and from Cedar Falls Teachers College. Her first teaching assignment was in a one room schoolhouse. Anne married Wayne (Stretch) Goldsmith in June 1948. They lived on farms near Lowden and Clarence, IA. A daughter, Pat, was born in 1949 and later joined by an adopted brother, Lee and an adopted sister, Kay. Anne and Stretch moved from Clarence to Wyoming, IA. Additional moves included Waukon, IA, Ottumwa, IA, Sioux City, IA and Rapid City, SD. Stretch died in 1985. Anne worked a variety of jobs but her favorite was teaching. Mrs. Goldsmith’s last teaching job was as a third grade teacher at Epiphany School in Sioux City. She married John (Jack) Fetz in 1991. They moved to Apache Junction, AZ where he died in 2001.
Her love of helping children continued while living in Apache Junction where she made hundreds of quilts for Arizona Blanket for Kids. In 2012, Anne returned to Sioux City to be near family. She was a resident of Holy Spirit Retirement Center for 6 years. During that time, she quilted lap blankets for the residents, made over 2,000 mini-quilts and blankets for stuffed animals and dolls and draw string bags that were given to Elks #112, the Sanford Center, Community Action and the Sioux City Fire Department. She was interviewed by local television, the Sioux City Journal and Globe Gazette for your loving generosity. One of her proudest moments was when she won a blue ribbon at the Woodbury County Fair at age 90 for a wall hanging she had made. In honor of Anne, please do something to make a child happy. She always said she could not hug every child but she hoped her quilting would bring love to any child who received and hugged her quilts.
