Calvin M. Shanks, 78, of Sioux City died Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at Westwood Specialty Care.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at Good News Baptist Church (3200 W. 19th Street) in Sioux City with Pastor John Woodford officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Calvin M., son of Walter and Bessie (Colten) Shanks, was born November 29, 1939 in Luverne, MN. Cal’s early years were spent on a farm near Luverne and then the family moved to Rock Rapids and later to Woodbury County where he attended Union Center Country School. In 1954, the family moved to Sioux City. On October 22, 1964, Cal entered into the United States Army and served until his honorable discharge on July 8, 1968 at the rank of Sgt. Following his discharge, he returned to Sioux City and worked as a security guard at Jolly Time Popcorn retiring after thirty years of employment. Cal then became a part owner at Alicia’s Taco Dome in Sergeant Bluff.
On August 27, 1983, Cal was united in marriage to Wilma Jean Cope in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Sioux City. She passed away on November 20, 2004.
Cal faithfully attended Good News Baptist Church and was a member of V.F.W. He truly enjoyed caring for his dog.
Cal is survived by one daughter, Kelly Deen and her family; one sister, Juanita Konegni of Sioux City; and special friends, Alicia (Lanny) Tillery and their daughter Ariel of Sioux City and Dimitra (Emmanuel) Kasotakis of Detroit, MI.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wilma; and two sisters, Marylou and Marylillian.
