Joyce was born in Sioux City on March 2, 1929, the daughter of Clarence and Flossie (Monk) Vondrak. She grew up on a farm west of Hinton. Joyce attended Perry Center School through 8th grade and graduated with academic honors from Sioux City Central in 1946. She continued her education at Westmar College in Le Mars for one year before starting her teaching career at the age of 18 in Rock Valley, IA. From there she taught at Lawton, Akron, and Hinton until going to night school and summer school graduating with her B.A. 26 years later.

Joyce had a great love for children, and she saw each student as someone special. Her career lasted a span of 60 years. While teaching at Lawton she met Fred Sparr. They were marred on May 4, 1951. Theirs was truly a marriage made in Heaven.

Fred and Joyce started farming in 1953 on a rented farm west of Merrill, IA. They farmed two years northeast of Le Mars then back to west of Merrill and soon after they bought their first farm south of Hinton, where they continued to live.

Joyce and Fred were members of Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars where Joyce was confirmed, Faith Lutheran and St. Paul’s Lutheran in Sioux City. Joyce taught Sunday School, Bible School, participated in making Mission Quilts, Apple Pies, and being the Sunday School secretary.

Besides her church involvement, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, and on the Board of Plains Mental Health. She loved gardening and growing flowers and was a member of the Siouxland Iris Society.

Joyce is survived by her daughter Mary Kay (Clarence) Holiday of Omaha, NE; son: Kim (Sharon) Sparr of Sioux City; daughter: Jan (Dave) Hinrichsen of Sioux City; and daughter Kelly Winegar of Hinton, IA; brother Jerry (Emelia) Vondrak of Sioux City, sister Kay (Larry) Hansen of Remsen; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years Fred Sparr, her parents, and a granddaughter Carrie Sparr.
