John A. Wiederin, 80, of Sergeant Bluff, IA passed away Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017 at an Omaha, NE hospital of complications from Alzheimer’s.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017 at the Church of the Nativity in Sioux City. Graveside services and interment will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll, IA. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday with the family present 6-8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave. Condolences may be offered online at www.meyerbroschapels.com.
John was born May 15, 1937 in Churdan, IA the son of Alois J. and Anna E. (Baumhover) Wiederin. He graduated from Churdan High School in 1955. He then worked for Ideal Mfg. in Jefferson, IA. In the early 1960’s he served with the Army Reserves.
On May 2, 1964 he married Rosemary U. Bernhotlz. The couple settled in Carroll, IA where they raised four children. In 1965, John started working for Iowa Public Service in Carroll. John also worked part time for his brothers-in-law at Bernholtz Brother’s Locker. In 1981 he transferred to Sioux City and retired from MidAmerican Energy in 1995. John also owned and operated Fike’s of Siouxland from 1984 until 2005.
John was an avid Iowa Hawkeye sports fan and loved to tinker in his spare time. He enjoyed family time, especially swimming in his pool with his grandkids and also playing Uno.
He was a member of the Church of the Nativity and active in the Nativity Men’s Club. John loved working the Lenten Fish Fry’s.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Rosemary; children, Kevin (Michon) Wiederin of Sgt. Bluff, IA, Donald (Cynthia) Wiederin of Sgt. Bluff; Jennifer (Glen) Coble of Onawa, IA; and Jason Wiederin of Omaha, NE; 12 grandchildren, Aaron, Sara, Katie, Seth, Allison (Nate), Jacob (Jenna), Kayleigh (Taylor), Megan, Bryce, Brandon, Jonathon and Andrew; a great-grandson, Braxton; brother, Ron (Donna) Wiederin of Somerset, WI; sisters, Wilma Schachtner of Somerset, WI, Eleanor Boes of Carroll, IA and Alvina McAnany of Omaha, NE; Sisters-in-law, Jeanne Wiederin and Phyllis Wiederin both of Churdan, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Tyler Coble; siblings, Lois Lynch, MaryAnn Sak, Wilbur Wiederin and Marty Wiederin.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.
