Fred was born on April 6, 1931 on a farm near Kinsley, Iowa, the first child of Julius and Georgean (Couch) Sparr. He grew up in Lawton, IA near his dear Grandmother Blanch Couch. He attended Lawton School, graduating in 1949. Fred enjoyed participating in sports, he played on the baseball and basketball teams, receiving honors for his efforts and skill.
At the age of 12 he started working on the farm of the McNaughton family. This continued through high school when after graduating he and his buddy Every Sorenson headed west. They worked on a ranch in Montana that summer, returning to Lawton in the fall. Fred took at job at Swift Packing Plant and was there when it blew up. Then it was back at McNaughtons. He also did carpenter work with his dad and brother Jim.
In 1951 he met and married Joyce Vondrak. They started farming west of Hinton, moved to north of Le Mars, back to west of Merrill and were able to buy their first farm in 1973. Fred was born to be a farmer and enjoyed every aspect of it. Fred was formerly a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served as Elder and on the Evangelism Committee. He later transferred to St. Paul Lutheran.
He was a little league ball coach and served on the 4-H committee. Fred also bowled on a league but mostly enjoyed farming and being out in the field.
Fred is survived by his wife Joyce of 66 years; daughter Mary Kay (Clarence) Holiday of Omaha, NE; son: Kim (Sharon) Sparr of Sioux City; daughter: Jan (Dave) Hinrichsen of Sioux City; and daughter Kelly Winegar of Hinton, IA; brother Jim (Gail) Sparr of Lawton, IA; sister: Lorna (Vaughn) Paradise of Denver, CO; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
