Ouida L. Olson

October 17, 1930 — November 2, 2017

Ouida L. Olson, 87, of Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2017 in Derwood, Maryland.

Ouida LaJuan (Martin) Larson Olson, the daughter of Edward and Iva Martin, was born on October 17, 1930 in Cordell, Oklahoma. She was a graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Oklahoma. In 1952 Ouida was recruited by the Red Cross and Civil Defense in Midland, Texas, to help with the polio epidemic in Sioux City.

In a 2002 Sioux City Journal article, “Ouida recalled ‘…I was told I had three choices, Kansas, Oklahoma and Sioux City. I remembered my sister and I, young girls in Texas, singing along with 'Sioux City Sue' and picked it,’ she said, breaking into the song, in her breathy Texas drawl.”

On June 6, 1953, Ouida married John W. (Jack) Larson who passed away in 1965. She later married Vernon H. Olson who preceded her in death in 1978.

Ouida was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, the Sioux City Symphony, and St. Luke’s Auxiliary. Over the years she was an active volunteer for the March of Dimes, Planned Parenthood, Heart Association, American Cancer Society and PTA, among other volunteer work. She enjoyed golf at the Sioux City Boat Club, bowling, and playing bridge.

She will be remembered as strong, generous, and caring, a lover of life, and, above all, a proud and loving mother and grandmother.

Ouida is survived by five children, Patty Larson and husband, Jerry Martin, of Washington, D.C., Mike Larson and wife Connie of Sioux City, Lori Mann and husband Richard of Indianapolis, Craig Olson of Minneapolis, Jason Olson and wife Kris of Kalamazoo; one stepdaughter, Kim Ciurej and husband Jim of Omaha; 13 grandchildren, Anna Anderson, Ingrid Larson, Shantel Roudebush, Kerstin Mann, Chad Mann, Ian Olson, Evan Olson, Joshua Olson, Hannah Olson, Gracie Olson, Samuel Olson, Milly Olson, Ahbi Olson, and seven great-grandchildren.
