Donald was born the son of William and Margaret (Sweeney) Berens on August 8, 1934, in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1952. Don attended St. Boniface Catholic Church.
“Doc” spent his career as a carpenter all of his life and came from a family of carpentry and electrical tradesmen. He worked for many contractors over his lifetime, and spent his last years in the trade working as a carpenter at Marian Health Center with his older brother Wayne. He retired from Marian Health Center when reaching retirement age in 2005. He loved his Notre Dame football, and was thrilled when he got the chance to go to South Bend for an Irish game with friends many years ago. He loved getting together during the holidays when family returned home to Sioux City, and was the family “Santa” for many years. There was always a good time spent at Prince’s tavern reminiscing and talking about the good old times, and telling the same old great stories. He loved to socialize and had many “coffee groups” over the years spent with lifelong friends.
Donald is survived by one son, Bob, (Candyce) Berens of Forest Lake, Minnesota; one daughter, Jackie (Edward) Kaiser of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Barbara; one sister, Marjorie Schlesser, five brothers, Marvin, Wayne, Gerald (Mike), Earl, and Meryl. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Mikey Berens in April of 2017.
