Michael Towne Nowlen, 70,of Sioux City died late Sunday, October 15, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospital from complications after surgery. Services will be Thursday, October 19 at 11 AM at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 4600 Hamilton Blvd. Visitation with the family present will be 1 hour prior to the service. Per Mike’s wishes, his body has been cremated. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mike was born September 17, 1947 to Wayne and Barbara (Towne) Nowlen. He lived in Sioux City all but a short time during the 1970’s when he lived in California. He graduated from Central High School in 1966 and attended Yankton College. Mike was employed at American Pop Corn Company and then worked for the Sioux City Community Schools. Mike was an avid toy collector and enjoyed traveling to toy shows and flea markets throughout the Midwest. Everyone knew Mike for his jokes – good or bad – he always had a story to tell. He loved summer trips to Okoboji, going to California to visit family, Las Vegas trips, and he was looking forward to our next cruise. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Barbara Nowlen, his step-mother, Mary Harless Nowlen, his father and mother-in-law, Delmer and Hilda Frey, his grandparents, and his aunts and uncles. Mike is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janet; his sons, Troy and Mike (Liz); his grandsons, Trevor, Michael, and Jacob; his sister, Polly Fair; two step-sisters, Betsy Nielsen and Georgeann Smith; brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Bonnie Frey; nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends that will miss him dearly. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Congregational United Church of Christ.
