Steven Charles Walker, 66, of Sioux City, passed away Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017, at Touchstone Healthcare Community in Sioux City.

Celebration of life services will be 6 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, 2101 Jackson St. Visitation with the family will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Following the services, there will be a reception and fellowship in the lower level of the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.

Steve was born on April 12, 1951, and died exactly 66 1/2 years later, on Oct. 12, 2017. He was born in Evansville, Ind., to Everette and Dorothy (Cline) Walker. Steve was the youngest of three children, having two older sisters. A year after the family moved to Jackson, Tenn., Steve moved into the Louisa School, a residential facility for Down Syndrome children in Murfreesboro, Tenn., where he learned to read and to write in cursive. He remained at the Louisa School while his family moved to Nashville, Tenn., and Bloomington, Ill.

After his parents moved to Sioux City, Iowa, Steve worked at a sheltered workshop in Sioux Falls, S.D., lived and worked at Hope Haven in Rock Rapids, Iowa, and then at Goodwill Industries in Sioux City. From 1988 to 2012, Steve lived in three Mid-Step Services facilities, each for approximately eight years, Jackson House, Castle Apartments and Spring Hill Apartments. Steve worked for many years at WACO now known as New Perspectives, Inc.

In October 2012, he moved into Touchstone Living Center to be close to his mother for the last two and one-half years of her life. Steve was an active and faithful member of First Christian Church in Sioux City. Steve was a sharp dresser and was very friendly and outgoing.

In his younger years, Steve enjoyed playing the guitar, participating in Boy Scouts and Special Olympics, square dancing, bowling, playing Bingo, making pot holders, watching WWE wrestling on TV, writing letters, and sending greeting cards to friends and family. One of Steve’s proudest achievements was receiving the J. C. Penney’s Golden Rule Award. This recognition was for a special needs person who volunteered in his community. Steve had served as a board member of ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens) for two years, along with his father.

Those surviving to keep his memory alive are his sisters, Judy Walker of Madison, Wis., and Lynn (Jim) Johnson of Sioux City. Steve is also survived by his nephew, Trent (Sherry) Johnson; great nephews, Braden, Connor and Dylan Johnson, all of Sioux City; one great aunt; one great uncle; and several cousins.

The family wishes to thank Mid-Step Services and all the staff that worked with Steve over the years. They also wish to thank First Christian Church for the love and acceptance shown to Steve, and for the spiritual guidance they provided. Very special thanks go out to all of the dedicated staff at Touchstone for being so kind, caring, and patient with Steve over the past five years.
