Mary A. Kennedy, 86, of Sioux City died Thursday, October 12, 2017, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at Cathedral of the Epiphany (1000 Douglas St.) in Sioux City. Burial will follow at Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m.
Mary, the daughter of John J. and Ann (Pearson) Wakeham, was born November 6, 1930 in Newfoundland, Canada. She grew up and attended school in Canada and at the age of eighteen she moved to the States. On June 28, 1952, Mary was united in marriage to Ralph Kennedy at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City and this union was blessed with eight children. She was a homemaker and worked part-time in banquets.
Mary was very proud of her Newfie Heritage. She enjoyed playing cribbage, gardening and spending time in Florida. Above all, Mary loved being with family, especially her grandchildren.
Mary was a longtime member of the Cathedral of the Epiphany and then a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She had been a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Mary is survived by seven children, Terri (Tim) Fitzpatrick of Omaha, Karen Kennedy of Sheldon, Iowa, Kevin Kennedy of Sioux City, Shawn (Kathy) Kennedy of Omaha, Dan (Julie) Kennedy of Sioux City, Amy Kennedy of Omaha, and Shannon (Jeremy) Kennedy Dittman of Sioux City; 17 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister, Stella Murray of Newfoundland, Canada.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph on Feb. 28, 2007; one daughter, Debbie Delaney; and six siblings.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Queen of Peace in Mary’s name.
