Harlan Lee Herfel

Harlan Lee Herfel, 86, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at a local care center.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Visitation will be Friday, October 13, 2017 from 4-8 P.M. with the family present from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Harlan was born December 15, 1930 in Dixon, NE, the son of Clarence “Bill” and Alyce (Understahl) Herfel. He graduated from Belden High School and then was drafted into the United States Army, serving as a radar operator from January 1952 to January 1954. Harlan married Mary Virginia Studley on June 6, 1954 in Sioux City. She preceded him in death of June 15, 2000. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Harlan went to work with his father where he owned and operated Herfel’s Phillips 66 from 1953-1995. After retiring from the service station, Harlan went to work for the Railroad until 2011. He enjoyed playing pool, darts, and pitch, and loved old cars and spending time in his yard.

Survivors include his children: Michael Herfel of Sioux City, Steven Herfel of Sioux City, Paul Herfel of Sioux City, and Sandy Christensen of Sioux City; grandchildren: Ashley Herfel, Heather Porterfield, Chuck Achuff, Dawn Steward, Ray Herfel, Alexandra Lambing, Adam James Herfel, Stephen Thomas Herfel, Brenna Butler, Josie Christensen, and Charlee Christensen; and numerous great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, son Charles Herfel in 2007, and a sister Mary Ann Herfel Berger in 2015.
