Margaret Marie (Mag/Peg) Brady, 75, of Sioux City passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at her residence.
Per her request, her body was cremated. A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City. Rev. Daniel Rupp will be officiating. Following a luncheon at Immaculate Conception, the burial will be in the Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Marcus, IA. Visitation with the family present will be from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Margaret was born August 7, 1942, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of John H. (Jack) and Eleanor A. (Bobby) Brady. She was the oldest of eight children and began her life on a farm northeast of Marcus. When her father died in a car accident in 1956, her mother and the eight children moved to Marcus. She graduated in 1960 from Holy Name High School in Marcus. She attended the University of Northern Iowa, graduating in 1964 with a B.A. degree in Junior High Education and English. She received her M.A. degree from the University of South Dakota in 1972, majoring in secondary education and library media. She also spent the summers of 1984 and 1985 at the University of Northern Iowa where she took additional courses in library science.
Margaret taught 7th and 8th grade English in Davenport, IA, for two years before coming to Sioux City, where she spent the next 42 years with the Sioux City Community School District. She taught 8th and 9th grade English at Hayworth Junior High (former East Middle School) for 16 years. When Hayworth closed, she traveled between East Middle School and East High School, teaching 8th and 9th grade English. In 1984 she was named the librarian at Hoover Middle School. After three years there, she came back to East High School where she served as librarian until 1994 when she was name the Head Teacher for Library Media Services for the district. Her office was in the Education Service Center at 1221 Pierce Street, where she served for the remainder of her career. She retired after 44 years in education in 2008.
Margaret always loved sports, beginning with some hotly-contested softball games with her siblings when she grew up on the farm. Later when she moved to Sioux City, she played for the Pizza Oven fast pitch and Quality Towing slow pitch softball teams for a number of years. She also coached 9th grade girls’ volleyball and basketball at Hayworth Junior High and a time later was head softball coach, head volleyball coach, and assistant basketball coach at East High School. After retirement she enjoyed playing lots of golf at Green Valley golf course in Sioux City.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Sioux City Retired Educators, Alpha Delta Kappa, an educational sorority, and Green Valley ladies’ golf league.
Margaret leaves behind seven siblings, Pat Brady (Lynn) of South Sioux City, NE; Bob Brady (Mary) of Dakota Dunes, SD; Julie Bindner (Pete) of Marcus, IA; Bill Brady (Diana), of Iowa Falls, IA; Theresa Brady of Marcus, IA; Jeff Brady (Mary) of Wayne, NE; and Mark Brady of Omaha, NE. She is also survived by two aunts, Alice Rasmussen of Sioux City, IA, and Vera Brady of Sterling, CO; an uncle Jim Brady of San Clemente, CA; and lots of cousins, nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Preceding Margaret in death were her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and several cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Siouxland Humane Society or the Green Valley Women’s Golf League.
