Clarice L. Nielsen, 96, of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, September 18, 2017 at Morningside Lutheran Church with Reverend Tom LoVan officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service time at the church. Clarice was born April 25, 1921 at Allen, Nebraska, the daughter of Clarence and Victoria (Becker) Carr. She graduated from Ponca High School in 1937, and attended Wayne State College. Clarice taught in rural schools for five years. Later she went back to Wayne College and received a B.A. in 1960, and a Masters from USD in 1971.
In 1943 she married Malvin Wendte. He died August 30, 1975. She then married Thomas Nielsen in 1978. He died in October of 1994.
Clarice taught in Ponca, Nebraska for four years and for 26 years at Joy Elementary in Sioux City, retiring in 1986. She joined a painting class after she retired from teaching and painted many beautiful pictures which she gave to family and friends.
She was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church and Ester Circle. She was also a member of Retired Teachers of Sioux City, Fidelis Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, lifetime member of Ponca Community Educational Foundation, Ponca Historical Society, Women’s Club, and a lifetime member of the NEA.
Clarice enjoyed tending her vegetable garden and taking care of flowers her entire life. She loved feeding the birds and being out in nature.
Clarice is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Wendte of Sioux City; a nephew, David Carr, who was raised in the family as a son, and his wife, Lynn of Hannibal, Missouri; two grandsons, Chad and Jeremy Wendte; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Pat Rowland of Seal Beach, California and Ruth Hathaway of Brentwood, Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one son, Lee Wendte; two infant daughters; one brother, Donald; two sisters, Muriel and Margaret; and brother-in-law, John.
