Barbara Sue Butler, 62, of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, September 2, 2017 at a local hospital after a long battle with cancer.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Kristine Stedje officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday with the family present 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be offered online at

Barb was born April 27, 1955, in Spencer, Iowa, she was the daughter of Donald and Lois (Peterson) Carlson. She grew up in Spencer and graduated from Spencer High School in 1973. She attended Iowa State University, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1976. On June 10, 1978, she married Craig T. Butler in Spencer, Iowa. She went on to attain her Master’s Degree from Morningside College in Sioux City in 1995.
Barb’s passion was education. She instilled this love of learning in her own children and in the hundreds of students she reached in the classroom. She taught for the Cherokee Community Schools from 1977 to 1979, Denison Community Elementary School from 1979 to 1983, and for the Sioux City Community Schools’ Talented and Gifted Program from 1991 to 2017. She taught at the Fairview School, West Middle School, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, and North Middle School.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Sioux City, and had served as president and on various committees. She was on the Iowa TAG Board and had served as treasurer, and was a member of Junior League and P.E.O.-Chapter IA. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family at Lake Okoboji, travelling and watching sporting events with her family.
Survivors include her husband Craig of Sioux City; her mother Lois Carlson of Spencer, IA; her children, Abby (Nate) Bockholt of Sioux Falls, SD, Paul (Chloe) Butler of Des Moines, Iowa, Anna (Alex) Lukehart of Omaha, NE; her sister Jeannine (Jim) Bunge of Hartley, IA; her brother: David (Liz) Carlson of Jackson, MS. 6 grandchildren, Claire Bockholt, Annika Bockholt, Bryce Bockholt, Nina Bockholt, Henrik Lukehart, and Emilia Lukehart.
Barb was preceded in death by her father, Donald.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the P.E.O. Cottey College Education Fund, First Lutheran Church or the Shriners Hospital Transportation Fund.
The family would like to thank their family and friends, especially Roger and Maria Schultz, the staff at June E. Nylen Cancer Center, and the nurses and staff of Mercy Medical Center for the love and care they showed for Barb.
