Merle J. White, 89 of South Sioux City and formerly of Ponca, NE passed away on Friday, August 25, 2017 at his residence after a short illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ponca, NE. Father Andrew Sohm and Father James Kramper will concelebrate the Mass. Burial will be at the South Creek Cemetery, Rural Ponca, NE. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Tuesday with a Vigil Service at 7:00 P.M. all at the Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Merle was born September 24, 1927 in Martinsburg, NE; he was the son of George and Rose (Kayl) White. Merle grew up on the family farm in Martinsburg and attended school in Martinsburg. He attended 11th and 12th grades in Ponca and graduated from Ponca High School. After high school, Merle worked at a packing house in Sioux City and farmed before entering the U.S. Army at the age of 23. He served in the U.S. Army in 1951 and 1952.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Merle married Mildred “Milly” Jones on January 24, 1953 in Ponca, NE.
They farmed in Martinsburg before settling west of Ponca where they farmed until retiring in 1991 and moving to South Sioux City.
Merle was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ponca and had served on the Church Council. After moving to South Sioux City, he was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. He coached baseball for 16 years in Martinsburg. Merle enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming.
Survivors include his wife Mildred “ Milly” White of South Sioux City; his children: Larry White (Sue) of Sioux City, Murray White (Pam) of Jackson, NE, Julie Kramper (Phil) of Jackson, NE, and Tony White of Moab, UT; 3 brothers: Paul White (Anna Marie) of Nebraska City, NE, Duane White (Marlyn) of South Sioux City, NE, and Kenny White (Margaret) of Sioux Falls, SD; 9 grandchildren: Cory White, J.J. White, Chris White (Jamie), Kylee Kephart (Clif), Zachary Kramper, Korah Kramper, Kianna Kramper, Sophie Kramper and Noah White; 10 great grandchildren.
Merle was preceded in death by his parents; a son Randy White and 3 brothers Ralph, Harold and Bernard White.
