Mr. Greive was born May 13, 1917 in Sioux City. After a short period in which his family lived near Ojibwa, Wisconsin when he was four or five years old, he spent his developing years in northeast Nebraska, where he completed the eighth grade in Newcastle.
His marriage to Lorraine C. Hoffman on September 23, 1939 in Sioux City was the beginning of an almost 65 and a half-year union, which ended when Lorraine passed away on March 15, 2005. Beginning in 1940, he worked at Wilson Trailer Co. in Sioux City for 38 years, where first he was a blacksmith and later was in charge of fabrication for number of years; he spent his in last years in the firm in the research and development department. Despite blindness of one eye caused by a childhood sledding accident, he served in the Philippine Islands as a member of the US Army during WW II (1942-45), first as a military policeman and then as an electrician. After retiring from Wilson Trailer in 1978, he lived two years in Nacogdoches, Texas after which he returned to Sioux City. He has been a long time member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Leeds.
A cheerful, optimistic and outgoing person who often helped others, Don was very resourceful and creative in making and crafting, whether it be wood, metal, electrical or cement. While largely self-educated, he maintained a strong curiosity throughout his entire life. He was able to clearly think out problems and often brought about original solutions that proved to be practical as well as greatly appreciated by others. A loving, caring husband and father, he also enjoyed growing gardens and trees and the outdoors as well as card playing, traveling, music and avidly reading and was able to spontaneously recite poetry by memory throughout his entire life.
In addition to his wife Lorraine, preceding him in death were his parents: Arthur and Margaret (Schieur) Grieve and siblings Raymond ("Ray"), Harold, Mary (Lute) Welch, Chris, Roy, Sarah McWilliams, Charles (Chuck), Margaret McWilliams ("Bugs"), and Chester. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Tyrone and Janet Greive of Madison, WI, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Siouxland and Calvary Lutheran Church.
The family would like to thank caregiver Mindy Weston for the sensitive, loving care that she gave Don over many years and the staff of Northern Hills Retirement Center, where Don lived for over 13 years and Hospice of Siouxland.
