MOTHER BETTE L. MITCHELL
Bette L. Mitchell, 82, of Waterloo, IA formerly of Sioux City, IA entered into eternal rest on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at Pinnacle Specialty Care in Cedar Falls, IA.
Funeral services will be 12:00 (noon) Monday, August 14, 2017, at Shilliam Avenue Church of God in Christ in Waterloo. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. A visitation will be held in Sioux City on Friday, August 11, 2017 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel (3220 Stone Park Blvd).
Bette L. Mitchell was born on April 23, 1935 to the proud parents of John and Roxie Hollingsworth, in Waterloo, Iowa. She was the fourth of eight children born to this happy couple.
Bette accepted the Lord at the early age of 10 years old in a revival at Shilliam Avenue C.O.G.I.C., under the leadership of the late Pastor-Overseer Elmer Carter. Bette loved to sing as much as she loved the Lord. She was known as the song bird of Iowa. She loved the Word of the lord.
Bette attended East Waterloo public schools. She graduated from East High school in 1954. After graduation she worked as a lunch counter server at Black’s Dry Good Coffee Shop.
In 1955 Bette left home and moved to Minneapolis, MN, there she united with Gospel Temple COGIC. She later returned to Waterloo, IA in June of 1968. At the age of 33 she moved to Sioux City, IA where she united with the Mt. Sinai Holiness Church under the leadership of the late Bishop Frankie Q. Roberts. She was employed at IBP (Iowa Beef Packers), where she worked in the packing department. Bette was the top packer.
On February 13, 1971 Bette was united in Holy Matrimony to Elder John Alvin Mitchell (who preceded her in death).
In July of 1982 she and her husband united in fellowship with Tabernacle C.O.G.I.C. where she served on the Mother’s Board and over the Special Prayer, Fasting and Shut-in ministry and the Sunshine Band.
Bette and her husband Elder Mitchell were members of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship. She also worked at the Winnebago Indian Fellowship Mission under the leadership of the late Pastor Grace Tillmon.
In September of 2010 Bette relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada where she resided with her nephew and niece, Drs. Kenneth and Elaine Hollingsworth, PhD. While in Las Vegas she united with High Praise Family Worship Ministries under the leadership of Dr. Kenneth E. Hollingsworth, PhD, Senior Pastor. She served on the Mother’s Board and an intercessory Prayer Warrior. She was very active in the Women’s Ministry until relocating to Waterloo, IA.
In September of 2015 Bette felt it was time to be around her sister, Mrs. Mary Brown and her other nephews and nieces, so she returned to Waterloo, IA. While in Waterloo she united with the Shilliam Avenue C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of Pastor Marshall Stevenson.
Bette leaves to celebrate her life: Sister, Mrs. Mary (Percy) Brown of Waterloo, IA; Brother-in-law, Alfred (Vernell) Mitchell of Opelousas, LA; Sister-in laws, Emily (William) Lemons of Houston, TX; and a host of nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces, cousins, sergeant daughter Teresa Lumpkin her bests friend Mary Seals and special pet, Khole.
Bette was preceded in death by her husband, Elder John A. Mitchell; father and mother Mr. John and Mrs. Roxie Hollingsworth; brothers, John H. Hollingsworth and James Hollingsworth; sisters, Alma Kenerly, Mildred Taylor, Lora Smith, Dora Polk.
