Daryl was born November 6, 1953 in Sac City, IA to Lewis H. and Bernette J. (Fawcett) Austin. He graduated from Sac City High School then obtained his degree at Western Iowa Tech. He later served on the Board of Western Iowa Tech.
On Sept. 30, 1989 he married his soulmate, Bobbi Jean Gierman in South Sioux City, Neb. Together they had two children, Kaeli and Nicolas who joined Daryl’s four children, Tracy and Thomas (Pam Sorensen), and Robert and Michael (Laura Vrba) from previous marriages.
Daryl and Bobbi were best friends, teammates, lovers, and companions who were unconditionally devoted to one another. To spend time with them was to witness a genuine example of an everlasting and groovy kind of love.
Daryl was honored to be part of the beginning years of the employee-owned company previously known as Phillips Kiln Service, which grew into an international business. After dedicating many years to Phillips, he became President of the company. He had the pleasure of working there for over 32 years, and took great pride in the lasting friendships he developed with his co-workers over the years.
Daryl was a social golfer and a weight lifter. He loved traveling, snorkerling, and sight-seeing with Bobbi when exploring the world together. Daryl’s deepest joy was being around people. He made friends wherever he went. In fact, one of his nicknames was “The Mayor” because he was so social. ALS stole his body, but not his indomitable spirit. His wish is for friends and family to enjoy life, count their blessings, work hard, have fun, and laugh about something each and every day.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbi; children, Tracy (Dwayne) Givens of Sioux City, Thomas (Melissa) Austin of Sioux City, Robert (Jessica) Austin of Des Moines, IA, Michael Austin of Denver, CO, Kaeli (Brady) Helmink of Austin, TX and Nicolas Austin of Sioux City; grandchildren, Chaquoya, Jaxson, Jaquan, Javontae; siblings, DeLayne (Tom) Herbers of Carroll, IA, Darlo (Janet) Austin of Sac City, IA and Doyle (Jill) Austin of Rockwell City, IA; parents-in-law, Jackie and Ottie Gierman of South Sioux City, Neb.; sister-in-law, Mari Beth (Jay) Jackson of Sioux City, IA; and nieces and nephews.
